  1. Changes in the New 5.0 Manual
  2. comparative review by Richard Shrout
  3.  
  4. There is now a footer beside each page number which describes the
  5. specific section of the manual being read.
  6.  
  7. The Table of Contents includes several additional topics and
  8. changes in order of presentation from the original manual. 
  9. Installation has been moved from the Appendix to the first main
  10. section.  Package components has been moved from the Getting
  11. Started section to the first section, Installation.  There are
  12. now contents listings for both the Reference section and the
  13. Appendix.
  14.  
  15. WordPerfect Corporation international offices are listed in Italy
  16. and Singapore but the Mexico office has disappeared.
  17.  
  18. p. 3 - Package Contents now called Package Components.
  19.  
  20. The last paragraph describing the number of diskettes in a
  21. package is new.
  22.  
  23. p. 4 - The second and third paragraphs are new.
  24. Subject: Auto-Install program.

  211. "Headers":  "If headers are defined after a graphics box which
  212. spans the current column (margins to margin if not in columns or
  213. across the entire first column if in columns), the header is not
  214. printed until the next page."

  216. p. 192 - A sentence has been added under "Help":  "If you are
  217. using a two disk drive system, you may need to insert the
  218. WordPerfect 1 diskette into drive A."

  220. A paragraph on Help options has been deleted.

  222. p. 194 - In "Manual Hyphenation" a sentence has been added under
  223. the heading "Cancel":  "When Auto Hyphenation is on and a word is
  224. hyphenated, you can cancel hyphenation for that word by moving to
  225. the beginning of the word, pressing Home, slash (/), then moving
  226. to the hyphen and deleting it."

  228. p. 195 - Under the heading "Hyphenation Dictionary" a sentence
  229. has been added: "While this dictionary is not required to run
  230. Automatic Hyphenation, it does make Automatic Hyphenation more
  231. precise."

  233. p. 196 - Under "Hyphen Types" a new section has been added on
  234. "Detectable Soft Return."  There are two sentences in the section
  235. but the period separating the two is missing.

  237. p. 197 - The illustration of the Hyphenation Zone has been
  238. corrected.  A new paragraph about percentage measurement has been
  239. added.  The first sentence under "Set the Hyphenation Zone" has
  240. been rewritten.

  243. been rewritten.

  245. A sentence has been added to the end of the Hyphenation Zone
  246. section: "The right hyphenation zone is ignored if justification

  250. about codes that cannot be placed in Initial Codes.

  259. key, press the Space Bar, the retrieve the document."

  261. p. 209 - In the initial settings listing the Hyphenation Zone
  262. setting has been changed to L=10%, R=4%.

  266. The Redline Format setting has been changed to "Printer

  269. The Units of Measure setting has been changed to

  272. p. 213 - The following sentence has been deleted under Kerning: 
  273. "If you want to kern a font that WordPerfect does not kern, you
  274. can create the kerning table for that font by using the KERN.TST
  275. file and the Printer Definition Program (see Printer Definition
  276. Program in the Appendix).

  278. p. 214 - A new sentence is added under "Keyboard Layout":  "For
  279. more information on how to use this feature, see Lesson 27 in the
  280. WordPerfect Workbook."

  282. p. 215 - A sentence is added at the end of the section "Selecting
  283. a Keyboard Definition":  "The number in the macro column is used
  284. as a reference should you include the keystrokes in a macro."

  293. Numbering":  "Line numbers are printed in the font that is the
  294. current font where line numbering is turned on."

  296. p. 229 - A sentence has been added at the end of the first page
  297. under "List Files":  "In order to print the List Files screen,
  298. press Print (Shift-F7)."

  300. p. 231 - Under "List Files Menu" the third heading on the page
  301. has been changed to "Other Directory."

  382. than 1", type zero before the decimal point (e.g., 0.5)."

  399. Contents pages has been added in the "Generate" section.

  401. p. 396 - The position of the two paragraphs at the end of the
  402. "Table of Contents" have been reversed.

  404. p. 419 - A sentence has been added just before "Current Page"
  405. under "View Document":  "Press Switch (Shift-F3) to switch the
  406. foreground and background colors."

  408. p. 433 - The "Advanced Macros" section has been completely
  409. rewritten.  49 pages replace the 13 that were in the original
  410. manual.

  412. The section begins with a two-page description of the Macro
  413. Editor, a screen shot or two would have been very useful here. 
  414. The section continues with 3 pages on variables, a brief overview
  415. of keyboard macros, and then gets to the heart of the section, 32
  416. pages on the various macro programming commands.  After a brief
  417. overview of various categories of commands including user
  418. interface, flow control,  terminate, external condition handling,
  419. macro execution, and programming aids, the comment capability is
  420. briefly described.  Then in alphabetical order each command is
  421. described, examples are given, and often useful notes are
  422. included.  The description and comments are much more
  423. comprehensive than was the case in the original manual. 
  424. Generally, at least twice as much material is included.  No
  425. example macros are presented in this section.  The reader is
  426. referred to the advanced macros in the Macros Keyboard.
  427.  
  428. p. 485 - Under "Convert Program" an additional sentence about
  429. using Convert with a two diskette system has been added after
  430. step 1.
  431.  
  432. p. 486 - An additional format has been added under the
  433. "WordPerfect" heading, "ASCII Text."
  434.  
  435. p. 487 - A new Convert option has been added, "4.2 to 5.0," with
  436. a paragraph of description.
  437.  
  438. p. 488 - The heading "Quick Convert" has been changed to "Command
  439. Line Convert."
  440.  
  441. p. 489 - Under "Graphics Programs" a paragraph has been added at
  442. the end of the first page.  Subject:  the utility program
  443. GRAPHCNV.EXE which converts a number of graphics formats.
  444.  
  445. p. 490 - There are several changes in the lists in the section
  446. "WP 5.0 Tested Graphics Programs."
  447.  
  448. The "Yes" in the Direct Support column for AutoCAD has been
  449. deleted.  "IMG.TIFF" is printed in the incorrect position after
  450. DFI Handy Scanner.  There is now a "Yes" in the Enable Direct
  451. Support column.  The positions of GEM SCAN and GEM Paint have
  452. been reversed in the list.  IBM CADAM has been moved three
  453. positions down the list for no obvious reason.  Javelin has been
  454. changed from "Yes" to "N/A" in the Grabber column.  
  455.  
  456. p. 491 - The Grabber column after Professional Plan is now "Yes." 
  457. SAS/Graph is a new addition to the list.
  458.  
  459. p. 492 - Under "WordPerfect Graphics Formats a new sentence has
  460. been added under the heading "DXF (AutoCad Format)": DXF files
  461. must be converted to .WPG files with the GRAPHCNV.EXE program.
  462.  
  463. p. 499 - Under "Options for Starting WordPerfect" two options
  464. have been deleted, "WP/B" and "WP/I."  The option WP/F1 does not
  465. appear.  A new option, "WP/W," has been added.
  466.  
  467. p. 500 - The paragraph describing the /W option  was added
  468. slightly out of alphabetical order.
  469.  
  470. p. 501 - The "/b" has been deleted from the sample DOS SET
  471. Command.
  472.  
  473. p. 502 - The section on the Printer Program has been completely
  474. rewritten and expanded from 1 to 23 pages.
  475.  
  476. The section begins with a brief description, then two pages on
  477. starting the Printer Program.  After a three page overview,
  478. various capabilities of the Printer Program are discussed in
  479. detail including modifying font attributes, customizing
  480. substitute fonts, adding a soft font or a print wheel, and adding
  481. a font cartridge.  There are no screen shots in this section. 
  482. Anyone needing in-depth knowledge of the Printer Program will
  483. need to get the Printer Definition Manual.  However, this section
  484. should be sufficient for the vast majority of WP50 users.
  485.  
  486. p. 526 - Two paragraphs have been deleted from the "Printer
  487. Troubleshooting" section.  Subject: printing garbage and the NEC
  488. 3550 printer.
  489.  
  490. p. 529 - Under "Screen Capture Utility" a two-sentence section
  491. has been added in "Startup Options" for the "grab/m" option which
  492. is used to generate monochrome bitmap files.
  493.  
  494. p. 531 - Under "Speller Utility" the heading "Phonetic Look Up"
  495. has been deleted.
  496.  
  497. A one-paragraph section has been added under Speller Utility
  498. Options, "Convert Dictionary."
  499.  
  500. p. 532 - Under "WordPerfect and DOS" all references to "booting"
  501. DOS have been changed to "starting" DOS.
  502.  
  503. p. 539 - A new paragraph has been added as the third paragraph
  504. under "WordPerfect Characters."  Unfortunately, the same
  505. paragraph has been added again as the fourth paragraph under
  506. "WordPerfect Characters."
  507.  
  508. An additional sentence has been added at the end of the
  509. descriptive text:  "You can also see which characters will print
  510. with a particular font by printing the CHARMAP.TST file on the
  511. Conversion diskette.
  512.  
  513. The descriptive name for each character set has been added.  The
  514. name for Character Set 0 is ASCII; 1, Multinational 1; 2,
  515. Multinational 2; 3, Box Drawing; 4, Typographic Symbols; 5,
  516. Iconic Symbols; 6, Math/Scientific; 7, Math/Scientific Extension;
  517. 8, Greek; 9, Hebrew; 10, Cyrillic; 11, Hiragana-Japanese Kana;
  518. 11, Katakana-Japanese Kana.

  520. p. 544 - An additional sentence is added under "WordPerfect
  521. Documents":  "STANDARD.CRS is especially useful for converting
  522. 4.2 documents which contain font changes, bin number changes, 4.2
  523. characters, or margin changes."

  525. p. 545 - Three sentences have been added in the section "Modify
  526. the STANDARD.CRS File."

  528. p. 547 - A reference to Paper Size/Type has been added at the end
  529. of the heading "Paper Size."
